There are many transitions that happen in a person’s life ,and turning 18 is one of them.  This is especially true for pediatric brain tumor survivors. We know that parents have lots of questions about preparing for their child to turn 18, especially if that child is already receiving disability (SSDI). Turning 18 in the US means “becoming a legal adult,” but for parents of brain tumor survivors, it means finding a balance between allowing your child to grow and become the adult they are and the desire to still keep that child safe and protected.

When you turn 18, you will want to make as many decisions on your own as possible, but it is important to remember that your parents may be your best allies in getting support into place to help you succeed as you enter adulthood. This is an exciting time, but it requires planning and good communication with your parents, medical team and other organizations you may be connected to.
