Just Us: Father & Survivor Retreat

May 30 – June 1, 2025

Located at Happiness is Camping in Hardwick NJ Contact Beth at bjones@cbtf.org for more information about next year’s retreat.

The Just Us retreat was inspired by a group of fathers of brain and spinal cord tumor survivors who wanted a space to meet other fathers, share their experiences and spend quality time with their child.

When a child is diagnosed with a brain tumor, the entire family is impacted. Families must divide their time between the hospital and the rest of their lives and oftentimes fathers are required to continue working during treatment to keep the family going. Fathers described feeling alone and unable to share their concerns and fears. They also discussed their difficulty talking to their child about medical and personal issues, especially those related to the brain tumor experience.

In response, CBTF worked with fathers to develop a weekend retreat just for fathers and survivors. We have held in-person and virtual events for the past six years. Just Us provides unique opportunities for fathers to have discussions with and without their children, participate in team-building activities and enjoy quality time together. It is a chance to get away from the stressors and distractions of everyday life and for fathers to meet and talk with other dads who get it.

At the heart of our Just Us: Father & Survivor Retreat is the profound sense of camaraderie and understanding that engaging families in an honest and meaningful way. It’s a unique gathering where individuals who have faced the challenges of brain tumor diagnosis and treatment, along with their fathers, come together in a space where they feel truly seen and supported. The journey of battling a brain tumor is fraught with its own unique set of trials and tribulations, not only for the survivor but also for their loved ones. This retreat serves as a sanctuary, providing an opportunity for these families to share their experiences, offer mutual support, and build connections that are forged through shared struggles and triumphs.

Throughout this annual weekend getaway, participants engage in a diverse array of recreational activities carefully selected to encourage bonding and enjoyment. From the exhilaration of rock climbing to the adrenaline rush of zip-lining through the forest canopy, from the focus and precision of archery to the warmth and camaraderie of gathering around a campfire under the starry sky, each activity is designed to foster interaction, laughter, and the creation of cherished memories.
