CBTF’s Regional Head’s Up Conference

Made possible through the generous support of the Deerfield Foundation

CBTF has hosted Heads Up Conferences (HUC) in Montana with Camp Mak-A-Dream since 2008. The program originated to meet the unique psychosocial needs of brain and spinal cord tumor survivors while building a much needed peer support community. At its inception, it was the only week-long program specifically for brain tumor survivors.

After the first young adult session we quickly realized the need to expand the program to teens and in 2010. Teen HUC was born! After 15+ years, we have grown to the point that the house is no longer big enough. It was unacceptable that we were turning away nearly as many people as we were accepting and recognized the needs of our community were evolving. We are proud of our accomplishments but knew it was time to make a change.

The Heads Up Conference Goes Regional

This year, we are excited to expand our reach and build stronger communities around the country by hosting three regional Heads Up Conferences. We have selected camps in regions where we have a strong following and local hospitals serving a large brain tumor population. Each space will provide a unique experience in a new setting. Hosting three regional sessions will allow us to share the experience with more teens and young adults, grow in person programming around the country, and try some new things!

Teen survivors (13-19) will join us at each session. They will continue to make connections with their peers (some closer to where they live!) and build a community they can lean on and grow with, into young adulthood. One of the unique aspects of teen HUC has been the mentor program. Young adult survivor mentors attended each session providing group and individual support, which we found was critical to building a positive, community focused environment. The mentor program has been so successful that it is time to expand it

We know each survivor has something to share and the desire to give back. These regional HUC programs will give teens the chance to bond over their shared experiences, and young adults (19+) the opportunity to take on leadership positions based on their strengths and skills. CBTF staff will bring our program development and psychosocial brain tumor expertise.

Together, we will create an unforgettable week and build lasting lifetime relationships. And, this is just the beginning! After this pilot program year, we hope to continue to grow and host sessions in more locations.

How to Get Involved

Looking to get involved or take the next step? Whether you’re a teen survivor (13-19), a young adult survivor (19+), or a volunteer, we have a simple way to connect you with the right opportunities. Fill out the form by selecting one of the options below to help us guide you to the next steps! Please be advised that the interest form is the first step in the process. Providing this information will help us determine which camp session is right for you. Additional paperwork is required once you move to the next stage in the process. We will contact you with information on next steps and with any questions.

Due to the nature of this pilot program, we may not be able to accommodate participants with high physical, emotional, or mental needs. Decisions will be made on a case by case basis. We will reach out if additional information is required before moving to the next step. CBTF is committed to serving all members of the community and will discuss other opportunities to become involved with CBTF in the event we do not have a spot at one of our regional sessions this year.
